Sparkassen Banks Launch Crypto Trading via DekaBank

  • Sparkassen launches Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana and Polygon trading through DekaBank.
  • More than 230 savings banks have reportedly expressed interest in joining the crypto rollout.
  • DekaBank charges €0.99 per order plus spreads, while crypto holdings lack deposit insurance.

Germany’s Sparkassen savings banks have begun rolling out cryptocurrency trading through their existing mobile banking app, giving eligible customers access to five digital assets. The service launched on Oct. 19, 2026, through DekaBank, marking a shift in the banking network’s approach to retail crypto investments.

Sparkassen Introduces Five Cryptocurrencies Through DekaBank

According to DekaBank’s product information, its ‘Krypto: powered by Deka’ service allows customers at participating savings banks to buy and sell Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana, and Polygon (POL). Customers can access the service through the Sparkasse app without opening a conventional securities brokerage account.

However, users must establish a separate cryptocurrency account with DekaBank before placing their first orders. The bank provides quoted prices that remain binding for a limited period, allowing customers to review transaction costs before confirming trades.

DekaBank charges €0.99 per order, alongside applicable trading spreads. As a result, the fixed fee represents a larger percentage of smaller purchases, while the spread adds another variable cost.

The service also differs from self-custody platforms because DekaBank manages customers’ cryptocurrency holdings. Börse Stuttgart Digital supports the custody arrangements, while transfers are restricted to wallet addresses associated with approved crypto-asset service providers.

Customers therefore cannot freely withdraw their assets to any personal wallet. The arrangement offers access through familiar banking infrastructure but limits investors’ control over their digital holdings.

Crypto Rollout Expands Across Germany’s Savings Banks

The October launch covers only selected institutions rather than the entire Sparkassen network. Initial participants reportedly include Frankfurter Sparkasse, Taunus Sparkasse, Sparkasse Karlsruhe, Sparkasse Rottal-Inn, and Niederrheinische Sparkasse RheinLippe.

More than 230 savings banks have reportedly expressed interest in joining the initiative. The rollout is expected to add about 30 to 40 institutions each month, with many interested banks expected to introduce the service in the first half of 2027.

Each savings bank will independently determine when to activate cryptocurrency trading for its customers. As a result, availability will depend on individual institutions’ implementation schedules.

The launch follows years of caution toward retail cryptocurrency investments within Germany’s savings-bank sector. Concerns about volatility and investor protection previously limited efforts to introduce direct crypto trading.

Even so, changing customer demand and the development of the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) have helped shape the industry’s approach to digital assets.

Despite the expansion, Sparkassen continues to distinguish cryptocurrencies from conventional savings products. The service targets self-directed investors, and participating banks do not provide investment advice through the offering.

DekaBank also warns that cryptocurrency prices can fluctuate sharply, potentially causing investors to lose their entire investment. Furthermore, cryptocurrency holdings are not protected by Germany’s statutory bank deposit insurance.

The rollout gives customers another route into digital assets through established banking channels. Its broader impact will depend on how many institutions activate the service and whether customers adopt it at scale.
